My first experience with real estate that I can remember was the 4-plex my mom and dad purchased. I remember it being really exciting that they were going to own more than just the house that we lived in. It was a lot of work as my dad managed the property and my sister and I helped with the maintenance and repairs…okay, so I watered the lawn with a hose and took out trash.
By the time I was in college I had met one of my first real estate professionals (my future father-in-law) who sold mostly ranches and a few other homes in South Dakota. He and his dad had been working in their real estate firm for more than 20 years at the time and this was in the early 90’s. His dad was also a very well-known real estate appraiser in South Dakota.
By the time I was married (and still in college) I realized that the money that was going into our rent payment was affording us a place to live, but was essentially money that we were burning, but being young and relatively unstable in our jobs did not really give us much of a choice.
A few years later we were able to finally buy a house with a great deal of help from our parents. (Thanks Mom and Dad!). The helped us with the down payment and even helped us secure the loan.
Finally we were homeowners and it felt amazingly good.
I remember the agent who helped us purchase our home and she is a fantastic real estate professional – one whom I admire and hope to emulate as an agent; caring, knowledgeable, and very helpful throughout the process.
If you are looking to experience the excitement of owning your own home, please let me know. I want to help you too!
